WTTC: 412,000 Travel & Tourism jobs across the U.S. will remain unfilled unless urgent action is taken

Source: WTTC A new analysis by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), which represents the global Travel & Tourism business sector, estimates 412,000 Travel & Tourism jobs in the U.S. will remain unfilled this year, putting in serious jeopardy the recovery of the sector. According to WTTC’s data, one in 18 jobs remained vacant during the first half of 2022, highlighting a talent crunch that has plagued the sector since early 2021. An estimated 321,000 Travel & Tourism positions went unfilled in the January – June 2022 timeframe (a 5.4% shortage), and worker shortages are expected to persist into 3Q, peaking at 412,000 sector job vacancies (a 7% shortfall). During 2020, employment in the sector dropped by 35.9% in the U.S. at its lowest point. As global Travel & Tourism began recovering in 2021, the U.S. saw a 12.4% hike in the number of jobs directly supported by the sector, adding a welcome 480,000 jobs back into the market. Despite the growth in 2021, sightseeing transportation, accommodation and recreation are experiencing the most serious labor shortage impact this year. Employers in the accommodation industry could struggle to find suitable candidates for nearly one in seven hotel and resort job

IATA: States Progress towards Long Term Aspirational Goal on Aviation Emissions

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomed progress by states towards a long-term aspirational goal (LTAG) of net-zero aviation carbon emissions by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement’s temperature objectives. This is noted in the summary of discussions for the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) High Level Meeting held in preparation for the 41st ICAO Assembly later this year. “The ICAO High Level Meeting’s support of a long term goal for states that is in line with the aviation sector’s net-zero by 2050 commitment is a step in the right direction. A formal agreement at the 41st ICAO Assembly would underpin a common approach by states to decarbonize aviation. That’s critical for the aviation industry. Knowing that government policies will support the same goal and timeline globally will enable the sector, especially its suppliers, to make the needed investments to decarbonize,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. In October 2021, IATA member airlines committed to net zero emissions by 2050. The path to achieve this will involve a combination of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), new propulsion technology, infrastructure and operational efficiencies, and carbon offsets/carbon capture to fill any gaps. “Net zero by 2050 will require a global transition for aviation to new

Cruise ship successfully refuelled with biofuels in the port of Rotterdam

Source: Port of Rotterdam The trial took place while the vessel was on a seven-day cruise, visiting Hamburg, Southampton, Le Havre, and Zeebrugge. GoodFuels’ next-generation sustainable biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation. The successful bio-bunkering demonstrates AIDA Cruises’ commitment to investing in new low carbon emissions technologies as part of their long-term decarbonisation strategy. Dirk Kronemeijer, CEO of GoodFuels, said: “This first bio-bunkering with AIDA Cruises marks an exciting step forward on the cruise industry’s decarbonisation pathway, demonstrating that our sustainable biofuels are a safe, technically viable and convenient option to drastically cut down emissions from passenger vessels.“As the effects of climate change are felt acutely in several parts of the world, the time for action is now, and biofuels are one of the few options that can already make a difference today. We are delighted to have worked alongside the trail-blazers at AIDA Cruises in the past few months to make this milestone a reality, and we look forward to collaborating again in the future.” Felix Eichhorn, President AIDA Cruises, added: “We continue to actively explore all opportunities to decarbonize our

Maersk creates a fast and reliable India-Bangladesh cross-border logistics solution using inland waterways

Source: Maersk Maersk successfully completed the first India-Bangladesh cross-border logistics of containerised cargo using the inland waterways of the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route for Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages. By transporting 50 containers (TEUs or Twenty Feet Equivalent Units) from Kolkata in India to a river port near Dhaka in Bangladesh on a barge on the National Waterways 1 on the India side, Maersk has created a new opportunity for customers to use the faster, more reliable inland waterways solution that connects the two countries. “The Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route has created great trade opportunities for the two countries over the last decades. By advancing into containerised transport on this route, we are expanding the opportunities for importers and exporters from the two countries with a faster, more reliable and safer option for their cargo.” said Vikash Agarwal, Managing Director, Maersk South Asia. The cargo movement on inland waterways or rivers is much more reliable, especially in monsoons, when the turbulent weather can cause delays while transporting goods over the ocean. Moreover, with the ocean network running under capacity pressure, the alternative inland waterways route that is quicker and more reliable has received a warm welcome from shippers. This solution also addresses the bottleneck

APM Terminals Moin improves performance and efficiency with Prime Route

Source: APM Terminals Earlier this year, the Moín Container Terminal (TCM) became the first of the company’s terminals in Latin America to implement Prime Route and one of the first globally. During its first two months of operation, the system has improved terminal tractor and STS cranes productivity and helped shorten vessel stays. With the implementation of Prime Route, the whole terminal becomes one pool and the system then automatically calculates and assigns instructions based on advanced algorithms taking in consideration the shortest distance, dual cycling and STS cranes speeds and other operational aspects. This helps improve the terminal tractors utilization and productivity, helping to deliver a better service to our customers and reduce our carbon footprint. “The Prime Route system is a tool that dynamically optimizes work tasks. A computer makes decisions in real time. Manually it would be impossible to process so much information and organize it in such a short time as the system does,” commented Emil Apostol, Execution Manager. Previously, several tractors were assigned to work exclusively for a specific crane. This meant that tractors could be operating with an empty load more than 50% of the time, since it would take a container to the

IATA: Statement on Dublin Airport Charges

Source: IATA “We welcome the Irish Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR) decision to push back on Dublin Airport’s proposed outrageous average 68% price increase. But even under the regulator’s revised proposal, the average price cap is still some 11% above 2022 levels. With strong demand for air travel now back, IATA is predicting traffic to and from Ireland to recover in 2023, well ahead of CAR’s prediction, which could allow for the charges increase to be cut further over the period to 2026. There is also no excuse for a repeat of the delays seen at Dublin airport this summer. It is now critical that Dublin Airport accelerate delivery of urgent Pier and stand capacity infrastructure within its Capital Investment Programme. If the airport is unable to service demand because it has not prepared properly, the CAR must ensure the airport is not rewarded for its failures. We will provide more information to the CAR on these and other matters ahead of the final determination.” – Willie Walsh, IATA Director General.

Port of Hamburg: deugro delivers four LNG storage tanks from the Czech Republic to the Caribbean

Source: Port of Hamburg deugro moved four LNG tanks with a unit weight of 225.4 metric tons and dimensions of 48.93 x 5.8 x 6 meters from the manufacturer’s yard in Decin, Czech Republic via the Port of Hamburg, Germany to the construction site in the Caribbean Sea. The project was executed in close collaboration between deugro’s offices in the USA, the Czech Republic and Germany. It was originally planned to commence the transport of the LNG tanks in Decin in December 2020, but challenging weather conditions led to an adjustment of the execution plan for safe marine transit. With only 90 centimeters instead of the required 1.90 meters, the water level of the Elbe River was too low for any barge transport. deugro was required to quickly arrange a secure storage area at the quay near the Port of Rozbelesy, Czech Repulic to temporarily store three LNG storage tanks until the water level of the Elbe River was sufficient. “The overall timing for the crane and barge arrangements was crucial to ensuring a smooth and final barge loading operation. Managing the timing of the barge arrivals in Hamburg with the arrival of the US-flagged, multi-purpose heavy lift vessel in
