Cargo Integrity Group of Seven Updates its Container Safety Guidance

Source: FIATA FIATA International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations, together with the six other CIG Group members today shares of the update of the CTU Code. The need for increased integrity in the global supply chain persists. The Cargo Integrity Group has updated its Quick Guide to the CTU Code and once more urges all involved in intermodal container transport to pay heed. The multi-faceted group of originally five, now seven industry organisations, produced a Quick Guide to the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code) some two years ago. The Quick Guide is designed to assist those responsible for packing containers and accurately declaring details of their contents to abide by the often-complex regulations contained in the voluminous CTU Code itself. There is also a useful Checklist of actions required by packers and shippers of containers.  The Group believes that awareness of the CTU Code is pivotal to achieving safe and secure transport and has followed up the Quick Guide’s publication with provision of its full text in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish and Italian. An update has now been made available, taking account of feedback, and is downloadable for free HERE.

WTTC calls on ICAO Member States to rally behind aviation and agree ground-breaking carbon reduction targets

A Long Term Aspirational Goal (LTAG) for sustainable aviation will be discussed at the ICAO 41st Assembly   Action will be key for aviation’s journey towards net zero emissions. Source: WTTC Attending the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Assembly in Montreal this week, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is calling on all governments to urgently agree an emissions reduction target for global aviation. ICAO’s 41st Assembly will see 193 countries gather for talks on the future of aviation. WTTC is urging all Member States to support the ‘Carbon Offsetting & Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)’ and agree on the proposed emissions reduction target called the ‘Long Term Aspirational Goal’ (LTAG). Whilst the Travel & Tourism sector recognises the challenges involved in the transition to sustainable aviation, WTTC believes CORSIA and the LTAG, aligned with net zero by 2050 and the Paris Climate Agreement, will be a critical next step for protecting the planet and maintaining global connectivity. Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Governments have an historic opportunity to sign a world-wide agreement on a net zero future for aviation. “The aviation industry is fully committed to reducing its emissions. We need that same level of ambition by governments.

Continuing growth at APM Terminals Gothenburg driven by companies choosing sustainable, efficient container freight

APM Terminals Gothenburg continues to grow and take market share in a declining Swedish container market, according to the latest figures from the Ports of Sweden. The fact that Swedish companies are prioritising sustainable, time-efficient logistics solutions is increasingly clear. Source: APM Terminals 49 per cent of the total Swedish container market was handled by APM Terminals Gothenburg in the second quarter of the year, the highest figure since 2015. Continuing the trend of recent years, the Swedish container market declined by almost 4,000 TEU during the first half of the year, while volumes through APM Terminals Gothenburg increased by 20,000 TEU. Two important reasons for this major growth are the ocean-going direct traffic between APM Terminals Gothenburg and the world market, and sustainable rail connections to and from all parts of Sweden. “The proportion of goods transported to and from the terminal by rail is growing rapidly and is now up to 55 per cent,” says Svante Altås, Sr., Sales Executive at APM Terminals Gothenburg. “The high demand for smart rail solutions is a result of companies having more stringent climate requirements combined with a prevailing shortage of truck drivers. In addition, our customers are seeing that rail is

Strengthening Albania’s capacity to implement and enforce Anti-fouling Systems Convention

Source: IMO A national in-person workshop to assist Albania with implementing the IMO Anti-fouling Systems (AFS) Convention has taken place in Durres, Albania (28-29 September 2022). The AFS Convention sets controls on certain harmful substances in anti-fouling systems, including organotin compounds (TBTs) and, from 2023, cybutryne. Some 20 government officials were sensitized in the actions Albania should take at a national level to fully implement and enforce the AFS Convention. The workshop covered technical and regulatory aspects of anti-fouling systems and assessed whether Albania has an adequate national legal framework in place allowing for transposition of the AFS Convention. The workshop programme included presentations and a site visit to a local shipyard, which offered participants the opportunity to see in practice and discuss relevant aspects affecting implementation and enforcement including survey, inspection and waste management. The workshop was requested by the Administration of Albania as the country is in the process of acceding to the AFS Convention. The workshop was delivered through IMO’s Integrated Technical Cooperation Programme (ITCP). Since the adoption of the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems on Ships (AFS Convention) in 2001, IMO has run a series of national and regional workshops to encourage
