APM Terminals Aarhus adds reefer plugs to meet record volumes

Source: APM Terminals A booming Danish export market is not the only factor driving volume growth at Denmark’s largest container terminal, APM Terminals Aarhus. The terminal continued to attract new services in 2021 and last week completed the installation of a further 180 reefer plugs to ensure it can continue to offer the service and flexibility that customers are looking for. Despite supply-chain disruption caused by the global pandemic, volumes at the terminal grew by around 13% in 2020. This trend accelerated further in 2021 when the terminal handled a record 397,121 container moves – an increase of +20% over the previous year. Reefer volumes alone were up 7% in 2021. In 2022, reefer volumes are forecast to grow further as the terminal starts to handle a growing share of Royal Arctic Line reefers. Accurate forecasting enabled APM Terminals Aarhus to plan ahead with phases 1 & 2 of its reefer rack expansion already completed in 2020 and phases 3 & 4 completed in December 2021 and January 2022 respectively. This latest addition increased capacity by 360 plugs, bringing the total capacity at the terminal to 1,548 reefer plugs. “The additional reefer capacity will allow us to plan for additional

CLIA Statement on the Transition of the Conditional Sailing Order (CSO) to a Voluntary Program

Source: CLIA The transition of the Conditional Sailing Order (CSO) to a voluntary program effective January 15 recognizes the cruise industry’s unwavering commitment to providing some of the highest levels of COVID-19 mitigation found in any industry. Cruise is the only segment of travel and tourism that requires, prior to embarkation for both passengers and crew, exceedingly high levels of vaccination (approaching 100% compared to only 63% on land in the U.S.) and 100% testing of every individual (over 20 times the rate in the U.S.). When cases are identified as a result of the high frequency of testing onboard, cruise ship protocols help to maximize onboard containment with rapid response procedures designed to safeguard all other guests and crew as well as the communities that the ships visit. Further, cruise is the only sector that continuously monitors, collects, and reports case information directly to the CDC. Given this oversight and the uniquely high vaccination rate required on board, the incidence of serious illness is dramatically lower than on land, and hospitalizations have been extraordinarily rare even while landside hospitalizations are peaking. CLIA ocean-going cruise line members will continue to be guided by the science and the principle of putting

IATA: Passenger Traffic Improved in November; Omicron Restrictions Likely to Affect Period Ahead

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that the recovery in air travel continued in November 2021, prior to the emergence of Omicron. International demand sustained its steady upward trend as more markets reopened. Domestic traffic, however, weakened, largely owing to strengthened travel restrictions in China. Because comparisons between 2021 and 2020 monthly results are distorted by the extraordinary impact of COVID-19, unless otherwise noted all comparisons are to November 2019, which followed a normal demand pattern. Total demand for air travel in November 2021 (measured in revenue passenger-kilometers or RPKs) was down 47.0% compared to November 2019. This marked an uptick compared to October’s 48.9% contraction from October 2019. Domestic air travel deteriorated slightly in November after two consecutive monthly improvements. Domestic RPKs fell by 24.9% versus 2019 compared with a 21.3% decline in October. Primarily this was driven by China, where traffic fell 50.9% compared to 2019, after several cities introduced stricter travel restrictions to contain (pre-Omicron) COVID outbreaks. International passenger demand in November was 60.5% below November 2019, bettering the 64.8% decline recorded in October. “The recovery in air traffic continued in November. Unfortunately, governments over-reacted to the emergence of the Omicron variant at the

MOL to Join Mangrove Restoration/Conservation Project in Indonesia

Source: MOL At the beginning of January, MOL announced that it has teamed up with YL Forest Co. and intent to participate in a blue carbon project aimed to restore and protect mangroves in South Sumatra, Indonesia. MOL will be involved in the on-site operation of the project in addition to providing financial support. Since 2013, YLF has implemented measures to protect 14,000ha of mangroves remaining in South Sumatra under the technical supervision of the International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME). The new project aims to avoid emission about 5 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) through forest conservation activities and to remove/store another 6 million tons of CO2 through afforestation of mangroves on about 9,500ha of bare land in the next three decades. The registration process by Verra, an organization that manages and certifies the voluntary carbon credits, is underway with an eye toward registering the project in the first half of 2022. Mangroves not only remove and store carbon, but also are called the “cradle of life” for their role in protecting biodiversity. Furthermore, mangroves are also very important as a means of adapting to climate change by protecting people living in coastal areas from high waves. Through this

Portugal’s Travel & Tourism sector faces job shortfall of 85,000 this year, says WTTC report

Source: WTTC A new analysis of staff shortages by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), has revealed a significant labour shortfall in Portugal, with 85,000 Travel & Tourism jobs across the country predicted to be unfilled by the end of this year. The worrying new figures from WTTC, which represents the global private Travel & Tourism sector, show for the first time the significant impact staff shortages could have on Portugal’s overall economic recovery. Data compiled by Oxford Economics for WTTC, analysed staff shortages across Portugal and other major Travel & Tourism markets including the U.S., Spain, the UK, Italy and France, focusing on the period between July-December 2021 and 2022. All countries showed significant staff shortages, with employment demand starting to outstrip the available labour supply. As unemployment rates decrease and demand rises, Travel & Tourism businesses have been left struggling to fill available job vacancies, and the report reveals that Portugal’s Travel & Tourism sector is set to witness a staggering one in six job vacancies left unfilled. Julia Simpson, WTTC President and CEO, said: “Portugal’s economic recovery could be jeopardised if we don’t have enough people to fill these jobs as travellers return. “If we cannot
