WTTC reveals new data signaling the recovery of international travel to the U.S

Source: WTTC New data released today by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and its partner ForwardKeys on international flight booking trends, reveals the long-awaited recovery of international traveler spending in the U.S. is finally underway. According to the research, inbound travelers are returning in droves after the U.S. government dropped the requirement to COVID test before entry. But while ForwardKeys’ data shows bookings increased by 93% during the past six weeks compared to the same period last year, international spending in the U.S. is still lagging other destinations and is not expected to reach pre-pandemic levels until 2025. “The spike in inbound bookings validates the U.S. government’s decision to ease travel restrictions by scrapping testing for visitors and returning U.S. citizens – something other economies did long ago,” said Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO. “The year-over-year improvement is promising, but there is still a way to go for travel to the U.S. At the current rate of recovery, international visitor spending will not reach pre-pandemic levels until 2025.” Simpson continued: “This finding echoes our previous study showing the U.S. lagging other countries in international visitors, resulting in a slower-than-expected recovery of international tourism revenue.” WTTC‘s latest annual Economic

Renewable liquid hydrogen supply chain between Portugal and Netherlands on the horizon

Source: Port of Rotterdam The consortium envisions hydrogen being produced by electrolysis from renewable power in the industrial zone of the Sines port. Then the hydrogen is liquified and shipped via a liquid hydrogen carrier to the port of Rotterdam for distribution and sale. The aim is to deliver a first shipment of liquid hydrogen from Sines to Rotterdam by 2027. Key sector players in Heavy duty, Marine and Aviation support this development as it fits well with their intention to decarbonize operations. “We consider liquid hydrogen as a key solution to import renewable energy into markets such as the Netherlands or Germany. We are developing the next generation of trucks which can use liquid hydrogen directly” said Dr. Andreas Gorbach, Head of Truck Technology and Member of the Board of Management Daimler Truck AG. Building more certainty for customers of liquid hydrogen is needed. Policy instruments that cover cost increases for end-users can be an effective means to achieve this. Such instruments are vital to increase the scale and reduce the cost of liquid hydrogen production and have the power to drive the infrastructure development along the full supply chain. Within the consortium, Shell and ENGIE will collaborate across

APM Terminals Moin improves performance and efficiency with Prime Route

Source: APM Terminals Earlier this year, the Moín Container Terminal (TCM) became the first of the company’s terminals in Latin America to implement Prime Route and one of the first globally. During its first two months of operation, the system has improved terminal tractor and STS cranes productivity and helped shorten vessel stays. With the implementation of Prime Route, the whole terminal becomes one pool and the system then automatically calculates and assigns instructions based on advanced algorithms taking in consideration the shortest distance, dual cycling and STS cranes speeds and other operational aspects. This helps improve the terminal tractors utilization and productivity, helping to deliver a better service to our customers and reduce our carbon footprint. “The Prime Route system is a tool that dynamically optimizes work tasks. A computer makes decisions in real time. Manually it would be impossible to process so much information and organize it in such a short time as the system does,” commented Emil Apostol, Execution Manager. Previously, several tractors were assigned to work exclusively for a specific crane. This meant that tractors could be operating with an empty load more than 50% of the time, since it would take a container to the

Canadian Government Urgently Needs to Remove COVID-19 Travel Restrictions

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is once again calling on the Canadian Government to urgently discontinue the current COVID-19 related travel restrictions. These are now out of step with the global trend of lifting travel restrictions and are partly responsible for the ongoing delays and disruption affecting air travelers across Canada. “Canada has become a total outlier in managing COVID-19 and travel. While governments across the globe are rolling back restrictions, the Government of Canada is reinstating them. The Government should follow the lead of its peers, including, for example, Australia. While that country had some of the toughest travel restrictions during the height of the pandemic, it has now lifted these, including the vaccination requirement. Rather than following this example and enabling travel and tourism to recover, those in power in Canada believe that throwing more red tape at the pandemic is the way forward,” said Peter Cerda, IATA’s Regional Vice President for the Americas. Hence, IATA is calling on the Government of Canada to quickly address the following issues: Remove random testing of international arriving passengersIf, as announced, random testing is reinstated from 19 July 2022, then travelers will be forced to either go to

IATA: Premature Return to Pre-Pandemic Slot Rules Risks Continued Passenger Disruption

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expressed concern that a premature return to pre-pandemic slot use rules in the EU this winter risks continuing disruption to passengers. The European Commission has announced it intends to return to the longstanding 80-20 slot use rule, which requires airlines to operate at least 80% of every planned slot sequence. Global slot rules are an effective system for managing access to and the use of scarce capacity at airports. The system has stood the test of time and while airlines are keen to restart services, the failure of several key airports to accommodate demand, coupled with increasing air traffic control delays, means a premature return to the 80-20 rule could lead to further passenger disruption. The evidence so far this summer has not been encouraging. Airports had the 2022 summer season schedules and final slot holdings in January and didn’t evaluate how to manage this in time. Airports declaring that full capacity is available and then requiring airlines to make cuts this summer shows the system is not ready for reviving “normal” slot use this winter season (which begins at end of October). “The chaos we have seen at certain airports this summer has

Shell to start building Europe’s biggest green hydrogen plant

Source: Port of Rotterdam Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant will be built on Maasvlakte 2. Shell has taken the final investment decision for this. The futuristic plant will be named Holland Hydrogen I and is expected to be operational in 2025. The 200MW electrolyser will be constructed on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam and will produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day. The renewable power for the electrolyser will come from the offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord), which is partly owned by Shell. Use of green hydrogen The renewable hydrogen produced will supply the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, by way of the HyTransPort pipeline, where it will replace some of the grey hydrogen usage in the refinery. This will partially decarbonise the facility’s production of energy products like petrol and diesel and jet fuel. As heavy-duty trucks are coming to market and refuelling networks grow, renewable hydrogen supply can also be directed toward these to help in decarbonising commercial road transport.
