African Travel & Tourism Sector’s Climate Footprint Revealed

World Travel & Tourism Council and Saudi-based Sustainable Tourism Global Center release groundbreaking research Sector’s GDP has grown on average 2.6% annually whilst its greenhouse gas emissions have increased by only 1.2% Source: WTTC The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the Saudi-based Sustainable Tourism Global Center have unveiled revolutionary new data detailing the climate footprint of the Travel & Tourism sector in Africa. According to the new data, between 2010 and 2019, the African Travel & Tourism sector decoupled its economic growth from its greenhouse gas emissions. The data shows the total contribution to Africa’s GDP grew on average 2.6% annually, whilst greenhouse gas emissions increased by just 1.2% during the same period. The data also demonstrates how the sector’s emissions intensity continues to decrease. In 2010, for every $1 USD of the region’s Travel & Tourism GDP, the sector emitted 1.45kg of greenhouse gas emissions. But in 2019, when Travel & Tourism was at its peak, this figure dropped by more than 11% to 1.29kg. This significant decline demonstrates the progress of changes implemented by governments and business leaders across Africa to create a more sustainable sector. In the same year the sector was responsible for an

Port applauds bold commitment to reliable and clean offshore wind power

Source: Port Of Long Beach Statement from the Port of Long Beach after the first-ever offshore wind lease sale off the U.S. West Coast, which will support California’s plan to transition to 90% clean energy by 2035 as well as the federal government’s bid to reduce the cost of floating wind energy by 70%: Last week, the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management completed an auction for five lease areas in Humboldt Bay and Morro Bay, off the northern and central coasts of California respectively. The lease will also be the first U.S. lease sale supporting commercial floating offshore wind development. To assist this historic action, the Port is currently completing a conceptual design of a facility that could support the staging and integration of the largest floating offshore wind turbines in the nation. Completion of preliminary conceptual design work is expected by April 2023. “Creating resilient and clean energy is critical to the future of our planet, and it’s essential to the Port of Long Beach as we pursue our Clean Air Action Plan goals of zero-emissions cargo handling by 2030 and drayage trucks by 2035,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “As the Green Port, we

Shore power from Rotterdam Shore Power for DFDS terminal in Vlaardingen

By the end of 2023, part of the DFDS ships that dock in Vlaardingen will receive electricity via a shore power installation. Rotterdam Shore Power B.V, a joint venture of Eneco and the Port of Rotterdam Authority, will supply this shore power. Source: Port of Rotterdam For now, Jinling roll-on-roll-off vessels for scheduled service to and from Immingham will use the shore power installation. The installation will be constructed by Actemium and has been partially made financially possible by subsidies from the central government and the province of South Holland. The use of shore power for the berth for the Jinling roll-on-roll-off vessels is in line with the sustainable ambitions of DFDS aimed at reducing NOx and SOx emissions. The other two berths will be considered for shore power at a later stage. Reduction of emissions and noise pollution The shore power facility consists of a converted 40-foot container containing electrical equipment that makes electricity from the public power grid suitable for use aboard the vessels. A cable management system will physically bring the electricity from the wharf aboard the ship with a cable and a plug. A remote control will enable the operation of the crane on the quay

Joint ILO-IMO meeting adopts guidelines on seafarer abandonment

Source: IMO New measures to improve conditions for seafarers, including those who have been abandoned, have been adopted at a meeting involving governments and maritime workers and employers’ organizations. Guidelines on how to deal with seafarer abandonment were adopted by the first meeting of a joint International Labour Organization (ILO)–International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tripartite Working Group. The Guidelines seek to address the significant rise in cases of abandonment of crews reported to the ILO, which have risen from less than 20 cases per year between 2011 to 2016, to 40 in 2019, 85 in 2020, 95 in 2021 and 114 cases as of mid-December 2022. The Guidelines aim to improve coordination among countries, including flag States, port States, States in which seafarers are national or resident, and States in which recruitment and placement services operate, in order to resolve abandonment cases more quickly, including getting seafarers paid and repatriated home to their families. The new Guidelines draw on relevant ILO international labour standards, notably the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended (MLC, 2006), including its most recent amendments; an earlier joint ILO-IMO resolution adopted in 2001 (Resolution A.930(22)); relevant IMO international frameworks and agreements; and relevant trends and developments in regional and national law and
