Port of Rotterdam: Rise of bio-blends and methanol: increasing variety of maritime fuels

Source: Port of Rotterdam It is almost impossible to compare the bunker figures for this year with those of five years ago. An increasing variety of bunker fuels is becoming available. This year saw the introduction of methanol bunkering. For the first time, there was also a reason to count bio-blend fuels separately. LNG bunkering is on the rise, although this increase was briefly halted by the price development. In December, LNG saw a price increase of over 300 per cent.  We will have to wait a little longer for hydrogen, but the use of ammonia as a fuel seems likely to happen in three years’ time, once the first sea-going vessels start using it. The port is preparing for the safe bunkering all these new shipping fuels. The key takings from the 2021 bunker figures are set out below: Strong growth in LNG compared to 2020: 188% increase to over 0.6 million m3. Less than previous quarters in Q4, as was already expected due to the high gas price. Bio-blend fuels total over 0.3 million tonnes. This is the combination of fossil bunkers and bio-components. We do not know the exact blend ratio. No figures are available for 2020.

Port of Rotterdam: Nautical annual figures 2021, safe year; pandemic no impact on continuity

Source: Port of Rotterdam The Harbour Master’s Division of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, responsible for the safe and smooth handling of shipping traffic and compliance with the Port Security Act, has made it through the second corona year unscathed. The pandemic did not jeopardise the continuity of services. The number of sea-going vessels arriving in Rotterdam increased by about 700 to almost 29,000. Three serious accidents occurred, each with only material damage. The number of sea-going vessels arriving in Rotterdam in 2021 increased from 28,169 to 28,876, down from 29,492 sea-going vessels that had arrived in the port of Rotterdam in 2019. The difference is largely due to the increase in the scale of container shipping. Slightly more damage The nautical safety index for accidents (7.5) was better than the target of 7. The safety environmental index for inspections (7.4) almost equalled the target figure of 7.5. As a result of the pandemic, fewer inspections were conducted, but these were focused more specifically. This led to a comparatively higher number of findings. Some 462 tickets were issued, 76 of which to pleasure craft. The number of accidents – half of which involving only parking damage (67) – increased from 122

Shell Chemical L.P. will continue to operate its 100% owned Deer Park Chemicals facility located adjacent to the site. “The completion of this sale marks the start of a new chapter of our history in Deer Park as we’ve worked closely with Pemex over the past few months to ensure a safe and responsible handover of operations for the refinery,” said Huibert Vigeveno, Shell’s Downstream Director. “The team at Deer Park has been instrumental not only in preparing the asset for Pemex operations, but also in continuing a legacy of safety and performance that dates back 92 years. We look forward to remaining a neighbour in the Deer Park community and growing our chemicals business to best meet the needs of our customers while advancing our global energy and chemicals park strategy.” As part of its Powering Progress strategy, Shell plans to consolidate its refinery footprint to five core energy and chemicals parks. These locations will maximize the integration benefits of conventional fuels and chemicals production while also offering new low carbon fuels and performance chemicals.

IATA: Statement on rollout of C-band 5G near airports in the U.S.

Source: IATA IATA welcomed the decisions by ATT and Verizon to delay the rollout of C-band 5G near airports and thanks the Biden Administration for their continuous efforts to ensure that passenger and cargo operations are not disrupted. But the delay is only a temporary solution. It still is necessary for all stakeholders and regulators, aviation and telecommunication alike, to continue sharing needed technical information and working together to reach a successful implementation plan that will ensure C-band 5G technologies can safely co-exist with the aviation industry. Any mitigation measures to ensure safe flying must be operationally viable. To that end, IATA urges the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to recognize the needs and recommendations of the aviation community in deploying C-band 5G. They also urge the US Federal Aviation Administration to accelerate its engagement with the FCC and to continue working with the industry and aircraft makers to expedite the enhancement of safe Alternative Means of Compliance (AMOC) solutions to minimize any 5G-related disruptions.

APM Terminals commits to industry-leading reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

Source: APM Terminals APM Terminals will bring forward its Net Zero greenhouse gas emission target to 2040, a decade ahead of its initial 2050 ambition. A 70% reduction in absolute (total) emissions has been set as an interim milestone for the period 2020-2030. This is the most ambitious target set by any terminal operator to date. This commitment builds upon the company’s existing strategic approach to decarbonisation and recent investment in a full suite of solutions to reduce its carbon footprint. It will also contribute to a broader target set by parent company A.P. Moller – Maersk to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in 2040 across all business entities. Science Based Targets The Net Zero criteria use the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) pathway to limit global warming to 1.5°C. They include a societal commitment to act now and drive material impact in this decade, and a commitment to deliver net zero supply chains to customers by 2040. “We have detailed plans to achieve this absolute reduction, supported by our dedicated Head of Decarbonization for APM Terminals, Sahar Rashidbeigi appointed in November last year,” says APM Terminals Chief Operating Officer, Keith Svendsen.“ As recommended by SBTi, over the decade APM
