IATA Welcomes Spanish Government Rejection to Raising Airport Charges for COVID Losses

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomes the decision from the Spanish government to reject the proposal from Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA), to recover economic losses amounting to EUR 2.3 bn generated because of the COVID crisis, by raising airport charges. The proposal that AENA submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) last year attempted to recover revenues not collected due to the COVID-19 crisis, for services that were never operated and that couldn’t be accessed by airlines. While COVID-19 had a catastrophic impact on travel, it did not have a substantial impact on the financial viability of AENA, as reflected by their 2020 financial statements and their results for the first 9 months of 2021. AENA has reported cash and credit availability for the coming years, making airlines believe their request was not only unjustified but also irresponsible. “We welcome that the DGAC and the Ministry of Transport have rejected an unjustified request for a cost increase that would have put the recovery of air travel at risk. This is a logical decision based on solid financial evidence and it sends a strong message to other airports and air navigation service providers tempted

APM Terminals: Sogester terminal Luanda gears up to meet future customer needs

Source: APM Terminals With this addition, the total number of cranes increases to 3, significantly improving terminal’s productivity. Frans Jol, Managing Director at Sogester, explains: “With additional cranes we are now able to perform «double cycling», which means loading and discharging the same container bay on the vessel at the same time. Higher productivity will also mean that we will be able to perform twin lift (lifting two containers at the same time) on both empty and full containers, which was not possible in the past.” Larger cranes will also allow the terminal to handle largest vessels calling the port without any restrictions, benefitting all shipping lines. The addition of two cranes comes on top of other equipment purchases in 2021, including terminal trailers and tractors, empty handling equipment and Ram twin lift spreaders, with a total investment value of $25 million. Gate automation and digitization Apart from equipment, Sogester has also progressed with the implementation of digital solutions at the terminal. During 2022, a new automatic gate software will be installed in Luanda, significantly facilitating the work of truckers who arrive to pick up or drop off containers. “Gate automation is a major milestone reducing queues at gates, allowing

Port of Rotterdam: Sail round the world with virtual navigation

Source: Port of Rotterdam The Netherlands is a world leader in maritime technology. Many companies at the port of Rotterdam are dedicated to expanding the field. One of these companies is VSTEP Simulation, developer of maritime simulators and software for training purposes. Port of Rotterdam Authority is using these solutions to train commanding officers for its vessels. As former developer of naval simulation games, VSTEP started building maritime simulators in 2011 – at first only for maritime navigation, but later also for inland navigation. The simulators have been used by shipping companies, maritime training centres and schools all over the world. Starting this year, the Shipping and Transport College Rotterdam will be training students on NAUTIS inland navigation simulators built by VSTEP. These will allow students to virtually navigate all the oceans and rivers of the world onboard a vessel that meets their training objectives. From small fisheries craft to a 400-metre-long container ship. This software also offers a fantastic solution for training pilots, who have to safely pilot vessels in and out of the port even under difficult weather conditions or when there’s a lot of traffic congestion. Enabling learning by simulation “Training on a simulator has several advantages

MOL Group Bunkering Vessel Successfully Operated Using Biodiesel Fuel

Source: MOL MOL announced that the bunkering vessel Techno Star, owned and operated by its group company MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. has been successfully operated using biodiesel fuel (BDF) supplied by Aburatou Shoji K.K.. In addition, Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK) certified that nitrogen oxygen (NOx) emissions from the vessel during BDF combustion are within emissions limits set by international regulations including the MARPOL Treaty. This is the first certification by Class NK in Japan. BDF used for the vessel as fuel is fatty acid methyl ester generated through transesterification of collected waste cooking oil with methanol. BDF is a biomass energy resource, which exhausts carbon dioxide (CO2) during combustion, but the plants that provide its raw material absorb CO2 and reproduce biomass, so CO2 emissions during combustion can be reduced. BDF supplied for the vessel is used by increasing mixing ratio with Class A heavy fuel to more than 30% first time in Japan, which is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 25-30%. The MOL Group set a target of achieving net zero GHG emissions by 2050 in “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1” (Fig.1) announced in June 2021. It calls for an initiative on “Adoption of Clean Alternative Fuels” (Fig. 2) to achieve this

Valenciaport: “The European programme for climate neutrality can generate environmental paradises”

Fuente: Valenciaport The president of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), Aurelio Martínez, has called for a review and improvement of the measures to implement the Emissions Trading System (ETS) for maritime transport included in the European Union’s ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package so that they are truly effective in the fight against climate change. For the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), the proposal, as it is currently designed, will have a “null” impact on the overall reduction of emissions in the maritime sector, and may even worsen the situation. Moreover, it will lead to a reduction in activity and a loss of connectivity of European ports which will result in a reduction in the competitiveness of the exports of companies. The ‘Fit for 55’ package envisages, among other actions, that maritime transport should be included in the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Specifically, it implies for the sector that shipping companies will pay 100% emission rights for journeys between EU ports and 50% for journeys to and from the EU. These targets will have an effect on the EU geographical framework, but will still have a negative impact worldwide as they do not affect third countries. “In general, we

IATA Launches New Ground Operations Portal

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced the launch of the IGOM Portal, a major support tool for the efficient implementation of the IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM). IGOM is the established global industry standard for ground handling worldwide. The IGOM Portal is an online platform where, with IGOM as the primary reference, airlines and ground service providers (GSPs) can exchange information, including any variations, on their ground handling requirements. “Safe and secure on-time turnarounds are a priority for airlines and a critical deliverable for GSPs. Standardization of procedures through the IGOM is a key enabler. But it must be implemented to be effective. The IGOM Portal will provide the means to understand variances and manage adoption,” said Nick Careen, IATA Senior Vice President Operations, Safety and Security. The IGOM portal will bring the following benefits to airlines and GSPs: Simplified verifiable communications: A fully traceable notification and acknowledgment function facilitates communications between airlines and GSPs on IGOM variations. Latest information: Real time updates to the IGOM are immediately published on the portal. Benchmarking: A comparison function enables a digital gap analysis between IGOM requirements and the manuals used by airlines and GSPs. Network overview: Local variations at all stations can be viewed
