Source: Maersk To boost the global production capacity of green methanol, A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) enters strategic partnerships with six leading companies with the intent of sourcing at least 730,000 tonnes/year by end of 2025. The six companies are CIMC ENRIC, European Energy, Green Technology Bank, Orsted, Proman, and WasteFuel. With this production capacity, by the end of 2025 at the latest, Maersk will reach well beyond the green methanol needed for the first 12 green container vessels currently on order. “To transition towards decarbonisation, we need a significant and timely acceleration in the production of green fuels. Green methanol is the only market-ready and scalable available solution today for shipping. Production must be increased through collaboration across the ecosystem and around the world. That is why these partnerships mark an important milestone to get the transition to green energy underway”. Henriette Hallberg Thygesen, CEO of Fleet & Strategic Brands, A.P. Moller – Maersk Once fully developed these projects of both bio- and e-methanol will enable Maersk to source green methanol at scale across several regions around the globe. Collaboration and investments in innovative projects are the most important ways to reach a net zero fuel value chain. Maersk

Air Cargo Growth Continues in January but at a Slower Pace

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released data for global air cargo markets showing slower growth in January 2022. Supply chain disruptions and capacity constraints, as well as a deterioration in economic conditions for the sector dampened demand. Note: IATA is returning to year-on-year traffic comparisons, instead of comparisons with the 2019 period, unless otherwise noted. Cargo demand is tracking above pre-COVID-19 levels, although capacity is still constrained. Global demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometers (CTKs*), was up 2.7% compared to January 2021 (3.2% for international operations). This was significantly lower than the 9.3% growth seen in December 2021 (1% for international operations). Capacity was 11.4% above January 2021 (10.8% for international operations). While this is in positive territory, compared to pre-COVID-19 levels, capacity remains constrained, 8.9% below January 2019 levels. Supply chain disruptions as well as a deterioration in economic conditions for the sector are slowing growth. Several factors should be noted: Supply chain disruptions resulted from flight cancellations due to labor shortages, winter weather and to a lesser extent the deployment of 5G in the USA, as well as the zero-COVID policy in mainland China and Hong Kong. The Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) indicator tracking global new

Maersk: Transforming logistics through technology-enabled, digital supply chain solutions

Source: Maersk A.P. Moller – Maersk’s strategy is to offer integrated solutions for smooth and optimised cargo flows that can span across all steps of the supply chain and create value for customers in the form of better supply chain outcomes, increased transparency and control, and ultimately lower end-to-end costs. This vision is being delivered by combining the broad product and service offering of ‘Logistics & Services’ with the highly reliable and more differentiated ‘Ocean’ transportation offering. In addition, significant financial and operational synergies are being realised between Terminals and Ocean via close collaboration to drive efficiency. One of the important elements binding all these aspects together is ‘Technology’. “Technology enablement is critically important for all value creation elements. It enables the creation of new products and services, facilitates a seamless, state-of-the-art, end-to-end customer experience, enables standardisation and automation of processes, and powers the next levels of operational excellence and efficiency”, said Vikash Agarwal, Managing Director, Maersk South Asia A key enabler of Maersk’s strategy is the digital transformation, where massive acceleration in activities was witnessed in the last two years. The turnover on the Maersk.com platform, which includes Maersk.com, Twill.net, Maersk Mobile App and EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), reached

Impact of Russia-Ukraine conflict on port of Rotterdam

Source: Port of Rotterdam The conflict in Ukraine has prompted the European Union and other bodies to impose a number of sanctions on Russia. The extensive import of energy (crude oil, oil products, LNG, coal) is not (yet) affected by sanctions, but the export and transhipment of containers in particular suffers from the uncertainty caused by the conflict and the sanctions. Russia-oriented transhipment Of the roughly 470 million tons transshipped through the port of Rotterdam, 62 million tons are oriented towards Russia (13%). Large amounts of energy carriers are imported from Russia via the port of Rotterdam. Currently this comes to roughly 30% of Russian crude oil, 25% of LNG, and 20% of oil products and coal. Russia exports products such as steel, copper, aluminium and nickel via Rotterdam. This is not yet covered by the trade restrictions announced by the European Union. It is currently unknown what the developments in Ukraine will mean for these flows in the coming period. Customs control Barely 10% of Rotterdam’s container transport is linked to Russia. The European Union has prohibited the export of a number of goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes (dual use). That means container

APM Terminals Kalundborg celebrates a successful first year of operations

Source: APM Terminals APM Terminals Kalundborg, located in North West Zealand (Denmark), received its first vessel call on 1 March 2021. Today, the terminal looks back on a successful year, during which it gained importance as an attractive alternative to Copenhagen, given the majority of containers discharged in the capital are transported onwards to other destinations in the country.  In addition to offering approximately 12h shorter steam times by sea, the terminal has helped remove heavy trucks out of the Copenhagen traffic. The terminal offers 24/7 operations, industry-leading truck turn times averaging just 10 minutes, and a comprehensive service offering, including maintenance and repair and reefer capabilities. APM Terminals Kalundborg has adopted cleaner fuel solutions, selecting GTL (gas-to-liquids) fuel for its reach stackers and terminal tractors. This solution allows the use of cleaner fuel in conventional diesel engines, is practically free of Sulphur and aromatics and produces significantly less smoke. The container terminal in Kalundborg is fully owned by APM Terminals and has a yearly capacity of 50 000 TEU (35 000 container moves). Located on an area of 50 000 m2, it has berth length of 500 metres, a maximum draft of 15 metres and 100 reefer plugs. Two mobile

Port invite comment on second cargo-handling equipment assessment

Source: Port of Long Beach PUBLIC MAY SUBMIT FEEDBACK THROUGH MARCH 31 The public is invited to comment on a draft 2021 feasibility assessment of emerging cargo-handling equipment technology that will help the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach reduce air pollution and reach the ambitious zero-emissions goals adopted in the 2017 Clean Air Action Plan Update. The draft 2021 assessment, which builds upon the inaugural 2018 assessment, examines the current state of technology, operational characteristics, economic considerations, infrastructure availability and commercial readiness relating to cleaner cargo-handling equipment.  The draft feasibility assessment for cargo-handling equipment is available on the Clean Air Action Plan website. The CAAP has established goals of zero-emissions terminal equipment by 2030 and zero-emissions trucks by 2035. As part of this strategy, the ports committed to developing feasibility assessments every three years for terminal equipment and drayage trucks to determine a path toward meeting those goals. Updated in 2017, the CAAP contains a comprehensive strategy to accelerate progress toward a zero-emissions future while protecting and strengthening the ports’ competitive position in the global economy. Since 2005, port-related air pollution emissions in San Pedro Bay have dropped 90% for diesel particulate matter, 63% for nitrogen oxides and

IATA Releases 2021 Airline Safety Performance

Source: IATA The International Air Transport Association (IATA) released 2021 safety performance data for the commercial airline industry showing strong improvement in several areas compared to both 2020 and to the five years 2017-2021. Highlights include: Reductions in the total number of accidents, the all-accident rate and fatalities. IATA members and airlines on the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registry (which includes all IATA members) experienced zero fatal accidents last year. No runway/taxiway excursion accidents, for the first time in at least 15 years. “Safety is always our highest priority. The severe reduction in flight numbers last year compared to the 5-year average magnified the impact of each accident when we calculate rates. Yet in the face of numerous operational challenges in 2021, the industry improved in several key safety metrics. At the same time, it is clear that we have much work ahead of us to bring all regions and types of operations up to global levels of safety performance,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General. Fatality Risk The overall increase in the fatality risk in 2021 to 0.23 is owing to the rise in fatal turboprop accidents. There was one fatal accident involving jet aircraft last year and
